With AirFinder, Link Labs has combined the short range benefits of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) with unprecedented flexibility in backhaul (cellular, wifi, ethernet) and the option of further driving down network architecture costs with our Symphony Link LPWAN. AirFinder supports a real-time location system (RTLS), while also supporting other BLE applications at the same time on the same network. An AirFinder RTLS system can be set-up in minutes.

Features and Functionality

AirFinder has features and functionality that blow other beacon-based systems out of the water, and offer comparable system performance to UWB and IR-systems at a fraction of the system cost and setup time.

These features include:

  1. As good as 1-3 meter location accuracy—think pallet or desk level.
  2. Super fast response times…under 5 seconds for most use cases. Can be made faster by use case.
  3. End nodes updatable via firmware-over-the-air.
  4. Enhanced end-to-end security
  5. Low-cost backhaul available via cellular, ethernet, or Wifi. Optional integration of Link Labs’ LPWAN, Symphony Link, to further reduce costs.

  2. Users can optimize settings by use case. User-defined geofences and alerts. Track asset history and last known location. User defined heartbeats and location updates, as well as low battery alert.




AirFinder’s BLE components (smart tags, reference beacons, and access points) can be connected directly with cellular (including the newly available LTE Cat-M1) or leverage Symphony Link before backhaul. This combination results in a longer-lasting, low power profile for the end devices and the access points.

How have we done this?

By leveraging the low-power and low-cost features of BLE with a state-of-the-art architecture.

The cost of an RTLS system is a function of hardware and installation costs, maintenance costs, software costs, and the cost of data. A small AirFinder system (e.g. 10 rooms) can be installed for under $300. Trained technicians or electricians are not needed to do the installation, and an installation can be completed in minutes per room. Maintenance is simple - customers can maintain their own system, or maintenance can be rolled into the software fees. Our software is industry-competitive and constantly being improved. With firmware-updates-over-the air, you never have to dedicate staff to get updates to your devices. Lastly, compared to BLE beacon systems, we’ve cut the data required to track an object by a factor of 100. If you’re running your RTLS system on a cellular network, the savings are enormous - or, due to the tremendous data savings, RTLS with AirFinder can now run on cellular networks without breaking the bank.

AirFinder does not have to use a customer’s IT network, which eliminates security vulnerabilities, expedites deployment times, and reduces setup complexity. AirFinder’s simple architecture means that anyone can set-up an AirFinder system - no need for electricians or professional technicians to do the installation. Further, AirFinder makes sense for installation in existing structures or with new builds.

AirFinder is scalable in a way that can’t be matched by traditional beacon-based RTLS. With traditional beacon-based RTLS systems, as significant numbers of assets (hundreds or thousands) are added to the system, collisions and data volume can increase to a point of system degradation. AirFinder smart tags only update their location, when they move, and only send one message to one access point. Thousands of assets can be in a single room without causing system degradation. Leaving network capacity for other applications.

Running an AirFinder system is simple.

All you need are AirFinder smart tags, AirFinder reference points, and AirFinder access points. We match backhaul to the Internet to the location and use case; AirFinder is supported by cellular, Symphony Link, and WiFi. The smart tags and reference points are BLE devices running the AirFinder BLE profile. With a Symphony Link-based AirFinder system, some additional hardware is required.


Reference Points and Access Points

Distributed across a facility or building; the more reference points in a network, the finer-grained the location accuracy. For example, you can put a reference in each room of a hospital to provide room-level accuracy. If you need better accuracy in the equipment and materials storage rooms, add more reference beacons. Location accuracy can get down to 1-3 meters, as good as desk level.

Smart Tags

Everything being tracked gets a smart tag. Smart tags determine their own location, and only send location updates through a single access point when their location has changed, as well as on a regular heartbeat. This means access points can support hundreds of tags (or even thousands of tags, for stationary use cases).

AirFinder users then match our tracking tools with their use cases. Users can set geofences and alerts by tag type, individual, or area. Users can optimize tag battery life by setting heartbeats and location update rates. User-defined reports give tag histories and last known location. Users have access to a web-interface and also mobile versions of AirFinder to track and find objects. With an optional facility visualization add-on, we can generate a visual map of your assets, tracking the movement of assets on the map in real time.

Link Labs not only sells its own smart tags and reference beacons, but many BLE devices can be programmed to run as AirFinder smart tags and reference beacons. Moreover, existing and emerging BLE-based applications can be made AirFinder-ready. The AirFinder BLE profile for end devices is tailor-made for inputting your application code, and once we’ve verified it works with our system, you are off and running with BLE applications from temperature and humidity sensing, to environmental and industrial monitoring, etc.
